(Granite Slabs, Baker Island, Maine)
Terry Toedtemeier, 2004

We were lucky enough to go to Mount Desert Island, Maine, a half-dozen times to attend the Acadia Summer Arts Program. This image comes from a boat ride to Baker Island, which is known for its smooth granite “dance floors.” In this image, Terry has isolated one of these giant slabs, and his camera angle emphasizes the rock’s fractures and its toughness as it daily confronts the ocean’s onslaught.

Untitled
(Cactus in the Fog, Huntington Botanical Gardens,
San Marino, California)
Terry Toedtemeier, 1999

Terry made this photograph in February 1999, when I had a research fellowship at the Huntington Library. When he came down to pick me up, he was able to photograph in the gardens each morning before they opened. I suspect he was drawn to the cacti because of their resemblance to the creatures and plants of sea caves: a resemblance enhanced by the damp, diffused light of a foggy morning.

(Above Leslie Gulch, Malheur County, Oregon)
Terry Toedtemeier, circa 2004

Terry made several trips by plane through the Gorge and over to eastern Oregon with his friend Herb Hill. Herb is a great pilot, and he was always up for taking the door off of Terry’s side of the plane and flying at low elevations. Terry loved hanging out of the plane, getting amazing images of the land formations that he had loaded into his comprehensive mental GPS.

Untitled
(Molalla River, Clackamas County, Oregon)
Terry Toedtemeier, 1992

This is one of many images that Terry made of this basalt formation on the Molalla River. I like this version because of the light, the structure of the trees, and the complexity of the basalt riverbank.
